(USA TODAY) -- Talk about shifting gears.
English actor Tom Hardy, who played the sinister villain Bane in 2012's Batman epic The Dark Knight Rises, will star as Elton John in the upcoming biopic Rocketman.
Production will begin in the fall of 2014, The Wrap reported on Wednesday.
Michael Gracey will direct the project, which has been in the works since 2011, Variety reported. Tony winner and Oscar nominee Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) is writing the screenplay. John and his partner David Furnish will help produce the film, and John is also expected to re-record many of his classic songs for the soundtrack.
Rocketman will tell how John grew from child prodigy into one of the world's biggest pop stars.
