LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Cobblers are a delicious and decadent dessert for any occasion, but it doesn't have to be hard.
Eric McCallister with the National Dutch Oven Gathering stopped by "THV 11 News Saturday" to share a simple yet delicious Dutch oven cobbler recipe.
McCallister cofounded the Central Arkansas Dutch Oven Group for the purpose of promoting the 10th Annual National Dutch Oven Gathering which is going to be at DeGray Lake Resort State Park October 18-20 you can find out more details at www.ndog2013.com or on Facebook. This is a closed event unless you register but it will be open to the public Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Oct. 19.
There will be over 100 outdoor kitchens and many cooking demos. If you contact the park you can participate in a personal Dutch Oven Class for the park called Adopt a cook, where one of our experienced Cooks will instruct you on all the basics and you will get a Dutch oven for taking the class but you will also get to join us for dinner.
Here is the recipe they shared Saturday:
Dutch Oven Cherry Apple Slab Pie
1 box refrigerated pie crust
1 21 oz can cherry pie filling
1 21 oz can apple pie filling
Cupcake shimmer white sugar (optional)
1/2 cup butter
3/4 cup flour
1 cup brown sugar
3.4 regular or quick oatmeal
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon salt
Grease Dutch oven. Stack the 2 pie crusts on top of each other and roll to fit in 12" Dutch oven, about 14" diameter. Spread the can of cherry pie filling in the center of pie crust. Spoon apple filling around cherry filling to edge of crust, fold crust over edge of filling. Sprinkle crust with cupcake shimmer white sugar (optional). Set aside.
Combine all crumb topping ingredients together. Sprinkle the crumbs of pie filling. Bake in 350 degree Dtch oven (one ring of coals around bottom and one ring of coals around top for 35-40 minutes or until crust and crumb topping is golden brown. Cool and serve with whipped topping or ice cream.
