FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Univ. of Ark.) - Former Razorback and pro football standout Wayne Martin will represent the University of Arkansas in the 2013 Southeastern Conference's Football Legends class, it was announced Thursday.
Martin, along with legends from the 13 other league institutions, will be at this year's SEC Weekend of Champions, which culminates with the 2013 SEC Football Championship Game on Dec. 7 inside the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
"We are pleased to honor Wayne Martin as the University of Arkansas' 2013 SEC Legend," Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long said. "It is the 25th anniversary of our 1988 Southwest Conference Championship season and Wayne was a key player in that memorable season. Following his Razorback career, Wayne went on to a long NFL career where he was known for his outstanding play on the field as well as his contributions to his community off the field. We look forward to celebrating his career alongside the other SEC Legends in December at the SEC football championship game."
A consensus first-team All-American and All-Southwest Conference defensive tackle, Martin recorded 162 tackles during his Razorback career, including 37 tackles for loss and 25.5 sacks. Martin still holds the single-game and career records for sacks at Arkansas, also ranking third in the school record book for tackles for loss. He helped lead Arkansas to four bowl games and a Southwest Conference championship in 1988.
Following his Razorback career, Martin went on to star in the NFL as a member of the New Orleans Saints for 11 seasons, playing in 171 games and posting 596 tackles and 82.5 sacks. Taken with the 19th overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft, Martin ranks second on the Saints' all-time career sacks list behind only linebacker teammate Rickey Jackson.
Martin is a member of the University of Arkansas' All-Century Team, 1980s All-Decade Team and the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame.
This year's SEC Football Legends class includes All-Americans, All-SEC selections and Academic All-Americans as well as NCAA and SEC record holders. The group represents teams that won national and SEC championships and are represented in state, school and college football halls of fame.
The class will be honored at the 2013 SEC Football Weekend of Champions Dec. 6-7 in Atlanta. The annual SEC Legends Dinner presented by AT&T will be held Dec. 6 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta and the group will also be recognized prior to the 2013 SEC Football Championship Game, which will be held at the Georgia Dome on Sat., Dec. 7.
Martin is the 20th Razorback honored in the SEC Legends program, which was launched in 1994 when the SEC championship game was moved to Atlanta. Former Arkansas honorees include Pat Summerall, Lance Alworth, Frank Broyles, Loyd Phillips, Ken Hatfield, Steve Atwater and Leotis Harris.
