CONWAY, Ark. (KTHV) - Conway Police Dept.'s Chief AJ Gary released the following statement Friday regarding Thursday's on-duty-injury of Officer William McGary.

"Officer William Michael McGary, 26, was directing traffic at a crash scene shortly before 8:00 pm last night when he was struck by a vehicle.The Arkansas State Police are investigating.

The driver , Barry Strickland , was arrested at the scene he has been formally charged by Cody Hiland, 20th judicial district prosecutor, for Battery 1st, DWI Drugs and other traffic offenses. He is being held on 150,000 bond.

On behalf of the Conway police department we wish to express our appreciation for the Baptist Medical Center staff and all the police agencies, Conway Police Department Chaplains and citizens of Conway for their support.

We ask that you keep the family and the police department in your prayers as we go through this most difficult time.

A note to the statement said that McGary is in stable, yet very serious, condition as of Friday afternoon.
