MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (KTHV/AP) - During a brief press conference Monday afternoon, law enforcement officials confirmed a 5-year-old boy was safely released after a week-long standoff between police and the child's abductor. It was also confirmed that the suspect, Jimmy Dykes, was killed.
Fearing child hostage was in danger, the FBI stormed the underground shelter in Alabama and rescued the boy. It was not immediately clear how Dykes died.
Earlier Monday, officials had said they had been sending food and medicine to Dykes and the boy in the bunker.
The boy has Asperger's syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
