BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Hendrix College women's swim team finished in fifth place and the men took sixth at the inaugural Southern Athletic Championships at the Birmingham Crossplex Aquatic Center. The Warriors broke three more school records on Saturday, bringing the total to 12 for the three-day meet.
Junior Jo Claire Robertson earned All-SAA Honorable Mention by placing third in the 200 yard backstroke in 2:08.54. The Warriors also littered the B finals in the event, with senior Sheryl Burt, sophomore Sydney Haldeman and freshman Kate Henricks taking 11th, 12th and 14th, respectively.
Burt, Haldeman, Robertson and freshman Caroline Forbes placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay in 3:44.52. They broke the school record of 3:44.83 set by Robertson, Burt, Vanessa Morris and Sarah Feather in 2011.
A day after earning All-SAA Second Team honors in the 100 breaststroke, freshman Bayley Krell placed third in the 200 breaststroke with a school record time of 2:27.77. The Denver, Colo. native broke Elyse Beard's 2005 mark of 2:28.96.
Forbes also broke her own record in the 100 yard freestyle in 54.95, finishing 11th. Sophomore Ava Commissariat finished the 200 yard butterfly in 2:41.90, good for 13th place and senior Anna Beucler was 14th in 2:42.04.
Sophomore Laura Prince placed 10th in the 1650 yard freestyle in 19:33.44 and senior Emily Hanson was 13th in 20:27.03
Centre won the women's title with 862 points. They were followed by Rhodes (719), Sewanee (714), Birmingham-Southern (520), Hendrix (384) and Berry (296).
For the men, the 400 freestyle relay team of John Byford, Samuel Maynard, Eric Mullins and Dylan Rogers finished sixth in 3:26.15. Maynard placed 11th in the 200 yard butterfly in 2:17.98 and Rogers was 16th in the 100 freestyle in 51.68.
Sewanee won the men's title with 862 points, followed by Centre (832.5), Berry (658), BSC (629.5), Rhodes (248) and Hendrix (181).
The Championships marked the final meet for four Hendrix women's swimmers - Burt, Hanson, Beucler and Alanna Montgomery.
