LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - On the fifth day of the manslaughter trial of a former police officer, two accident reconstruction experts were questioned.
Former Little Rock police officer Josh Hastings is charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of burglary suspect, Bobby Moore III. Hastings was fired after the death last August. Hastings' trial opened this week in Pulaski County Circuit Court.
Hastings has said all along he acted in self-defense when he arrived at a scene to find Moore and two others breaking into the cars. Hastings says the two got into a vehicle and drove right at him. That is when he felt threatened and fired three shots through the windshield, killing the driver 15-year-old Bobby Moore.
Friday, Judge Wendell Griffin told both sides, he would no longer tolerate arguments of self-defense and if he heard that argument from either side again, he would hold them in contempt and declare a mistrial.
Judge Griffin said his reason is that Hastings is charged with manslaughter which means the state believes he acted recklessly and negligently and caused the death of Bobby Moore. Judge Griffin said it is the defense's job to prove he was not reckless and that he acted reasonably but that isn't the same as self-defense.
The jury heard from two different accident reconstruction experts Friday. The conversation continued to surround how fast the car was going, what direction and if Josh Hastings was ever in any true danger.
Both sides rested just before 5 p.m. Friday. The jury will return Saturday morning to hear closing arguments.
