LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A daytime look at an Arkansas highway bridge struck by a runaway barge showed signs of damage but nothing so significant that the roadway should be closed.
The head of the Arkansas Waterways Commission and others viewed piers beneath the Interstate 30 bridge between Little Rock and North Little Rock on Saturday and discovered that protective devices worked as designed.
State police closed five of Little Rock's six downtown bridges Friday night after a towboat operator said he feared he had struck the spans. The I-30 bridge and a pedestrian bridge had been hit but were cleared for traffic an hour later. The only bridge not closed was a railroad trestle.
Highway department officials said Saturday there were confident the bridges were safe and would inspect them Monday.
