Long Beach, CA (Sports Network) - Mike Caffey finished with 10 points,
including the game-winning pair of free-throws with eight seconds remaining,
as the Long Beach State 49ers outlasted the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 57-55,
in a Big West Conference bout at Walter Pyramid.
Tony Freeland and James Ennis each scored 16 points for LBSU (12-8, 8-1 Big
West), which extended its season-long winning streak to seven games. Freeland
also grabbed nine rebounds for the home team.
For UCSB (7-13, 3-6), Kyle Boswell netted 13 points and Taran Brown logged 12
points, eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. The Gauchos are now losers
of three straight games.
UCSB opened the game on a 7-0 run, but LBSU climbed back to eventually take a
30-28 lead at intermission. Neither team shot greater than 39 percent from the
field in the first half.
The 49ers led for the majority of the second half, but the Gauchos kept the
game within striking distance throughout, and with 26 seconds left, Michael
Bryson drilled a 3-pointer to tie it up at 55-55. On the other end, Boswell
fouled Caffey, who cashed in with a 2-of-2 trip to the line. UCSB was left
with one last chance but a Boswell 3-pointer in the waning seconds was off the
mark.
LBSU outscored UCSB from the foul line, 18-10.
