Homeowners without electricity struggle to escape the summer heat

Cleanup from Wednesday night’s storm continues, leaving people across Little Rock left in the dark.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Cleanup from Wednesday night’s storm continues, leaving people across Little Rock left in the dark.

Several homeowners had to find alternative ways to escape the heat.

Sonya Irving lives off Cheryl Street in North Little Rock and has been without power since Wednesday night.

“We tried to tough it out yesterday, hoping and praying the lights would come back on and finally, about 6 o'clock last night, we just couldn't take it anymore,” Irving said.

Her and her family had no idea when their lights would turn back on and the summer heat became unbearable, so they decided to pack up and ended up snagging the last hotel room.

“I'm a homebody & so it's just kind of frustrating not being able to get comfortable on my couch, in front of my TV. The humidity, it's just -- you might know this would happen the two hottest days of summer so far. It's been miserable,” Irving said.

Irving and her family were not alone as several people in Little Rock shared the same feeling of misery. Many residents spent today cleaning up what the Wednesday storm brought along.

Debra Bowers said it took her an hour to clean up her front yard and she had about two trashcans full of debris.

While people continue to clean up, electricity companies are working around the clock.

Jill Ponder, Director of Business Operations for North Little Rock Electric, said over 800 people were without power Friday morning.

“We are working through the majority of them today,” she said.

Ponder said they will not stop until the job is done.

For now, several homeowners just have to sit and wait for their lights to come back on. Both Irving and Bowers said they are ready for everything to go back to normal.

“It’s been frustrating, we just kind of want to be home,” Irving said.
