LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- 10-year-old Arkansan Diamond Britt drowned in the Red River trying to save her cousin's life.
Analyssia Britt, the cousin Diamond saved, said the current took her under and Diamond tried to save her. While Diamond was trying to pull Analyssia to shore, she slipped and the current drug her under but she got Analyssia close enough to be pulled out.
“Diamond and I were really close, I was closer to her than any of my siblings. She was the most sweet and lovely person, if she had something she wanted to make sure that I had it,” said Analyssia.
Diamond’s sacrifice is something 11-year-old Analyssia said she just can't understand.
“Why would you come and save me, she should have just let me go,” she said it's hard for her to talk about it. “It's hard for me to see the Red River anymore.”
Diamond's grandmother, Sharkey Branch, said this isn't the first time this has happened in their family.
“It's awful, I don't understand. I found out that my kid's uncle’s son drowned in the Red River the exact same day a few years ago in the exact same spot. It hit our family again, the same day, the same spot,” she said.
She said their family will grieve for a long time, but they want to be sure Diamond is remembered as the fun loving sweet girl they all loved.
“She's real petite and pretty and she's a diamond. Diamond fits her, she was a sweetheart,” said Branch.
