NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- As we're getting cooler weather, you may see more cyclists out on the Arkansas River Trail, but part of it is still closed due to the Broadway Bridge Construction.

A major portion of the trail near the Broadway Bridge on the North Little Rock side has been closed for more than a year and cyclists have become used to detours. By next year, it's all expected to be open and even better than before.

"It’s just a pleasant ride, it’s sort of an easy ride, you can be sort of a novice," said Everett Liddell in town from Memphis.

The opening of the Broadway Bridge has been a treat for drivers, but now cyclists are waiting their turn.

"Well, anybody you talk to mentions the construction," said Liddell.

According to the city of North Little Rock officials, all of the construction is expected to be complete with the trail back open by mid-December. As soon as the Broadway Bridge construction is complete later this year, workers will begin repairing and cleaning up the trail running underneath the bridge.

“Spring time’s going to be great, but those bicyclists, they’re hardcore and sometimes they ride in the winter," said Nathan Hamilton with the city of North Little Rock.

The Broadway Bridge will offer cyclists another option with the new ramps.

“They’re going to have a return to the great asset they know and love and hopefully it will be a little better for them, a little smoother and they have another option to go up a bridge," said Hamilton.

A smaller project happening right now is workers are installing a drinking water fountain along Rockwater at the request of cyclists.
