BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) -- Benton police want to send a strong message.

If you break into a home or business you will be caught and you will be arrested. They're calling it their Bustin' Burglars initiative.

Through September, they'll not only be stepping up patrols, but educating homeowners and employers on how to best protect themselves from thieves.

“Maybe getting some extra lighting, motion lights, and keeping your doors locked. Also keeping your vehicles locked as well,” said Sgt. Quinton Jackson with the Benton Police Department.

Sgt. Jackson said whether your car is locked or not, you can't leave valuables inside such as phones or computers.

Last year, police in Benton investigated 204 burglaries. So far this year they've had 129.
