BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) -- Keagan Schweikle,17, was shot and killed by Benton police mid-day Monday.

His identity was confirmed by the Harmony Grove school district, where Schweikle was a student and baseball player.

"We at Harmony Grove are saddened by the tragic events of yesterday, and are grieving the loss of one of our students, Keagan Schweikle," said Harmony Grove high school Principal Chad Withers, in a released statement. The principle asked everyone to keep his family and friends in their thoughts and prayers, adding that counselors will be available to speak with students and faculty as they grieve this loss.

"We ask that the privacy of the family, as well as the privacy of our student body be respected during this difficult time and in the days ahead."

Schweikle was shot on the bank of the Saline River, after his mother called 9-1-1. The initial call came as Schweikle was suicidal and ran in to the woods near his home, carrying a .40 caliber pistol.

What happened when police followed him in to the woods is still unclear.

There have been three incidents reported at the River Oaks residence in the recent past; one for burglary, one for a theft, and once for a runaway.

There is no dash camera video, because the incident took place deep in the woods. BPD does not have body cameras, and witnesses are still being interviewed by police.

The identity of the police officer has not yet been released. Benton's City Attorney Brent Houston said because the investigation is ongoing, they are not ready to release his information. BPD did confirm that the officer is on paid administrative leave.

Two other officers were on the scene and are giving statements to police.

The officer that fired the shot has not given a statement yet. He has 48-hours from the time of the incident to give one. After the officer has given his official statement, the witness and other officers' statements will be given to the prosecuting attorney, along with the evidence.

The prosecutor will then decide whether or not they will press charges against the officer.
