The Chicot County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a 3-year-old girl after she passed away due to injuries sustained during an alleged abuse incident involving the mother's boyfriend.

According to Sheriff Ronald Nichols, authorities were notified after the 3-year-old, Journee Orji, arrived at a local emergency room with "severe injuries" in Lake Village on October 31.

Orji was then air lifted to Arkansas Children's Hospital where she later passed away from her injuries the next day.

Orji's mother told authorities that her boyfriend, Jeffery Tucker, had spanked the child earlier in the day. Tucker was arrested in Eudora and has been charged with capital murder and is being held with no bond.

A future court date for Tucker has not been set at this time. He is being held in the Jefferson County Jail.

Nichols said that the whole incident has been a "very emotional case" for both himself and his deputies.

"I would like to add that behind the badge, we are only human," Nichols said.

In a Facebook post, Nichols asked that people keep the family of Journee Orji in their thoughts and prayers.
