Community mourns soup kitchen chef killed in drive-by shooting

NORTH LITTLE ROCK - Harris was trained as a chef but most recently acted as a fulltime caretaker for his mom.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Services are scheduled for the man killed in a drive-by shooting March 17 on Boyle Park Drive.

According to a police report, Charles Harris had picked up a friend and was driving him home just before 1 a.m. when someone in another vehicle opened fire on them near the park's maintenance entrance.

"I personally believe he was just at the wrong place at the wrong time," Harris's uncle, Buz Lassiter told THV11.

As of the afternoon of March 25, Little Rock Police Department homicide detectives had not determined a suspect or motive in the case. Lassiter called it "a senseless drive-by shooting."

Harris, 47, was trained as a chef but most recently acted as a fulltime caretaker for his mom.

"He really loved helping people," Lassiter said of his nephew.

In 2017, Lassiter formed The Gathering of Love in North Little Rock. Harris operated the church's soup kitchen, preparing meals out of his home and delivering them to the homeless once a week.

"Our soup kitchen had a chef, and you could tell it from the love he put into the meals," Lassiter said.

As they deal with the grief of suddenly losing a loved one, Harris's family members find comfort in their faith and have a message for his killer.

"There's nothing in the world that can bring my nephew Charles back," Lassiter said. "My message would be they need to change their heart; they need to recognize and believe in a great God that loves them."

Meanwhile, The Gathering of Love Soup Kitchen will be renamed the Charles Harris Soup Kitchen.

A memorial service will be held for Harris at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 31 at The Gathering of Love, located at 9th and Parker Streets in North Little Rock.

The family is accepting donations for the food pantry in his honor. They can be mailed to Soup Kitchen/The Gathering of Love 1301 West 8th Street, North Little Rock, Ark., 72114.

Little Rock police ask anyone with any information on Harris's murder to call 501-371-INFO. On Sunday, a department spokesperson stressed that even the slightest clue could help detectives solve the case.
