SALINE COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) – Charges were upgraded on Friday for a Saline County man after his two children were found dead in a pond.
According to the Saline County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the 16000 block of Highway 298 in Paron late Wednesday night about a missing truck with two children inside. While heading towards the call, dispatchers notified deputies that the truck was found inside a pond close to the address.
Police arrested the parents of the children who they believe are connected to the deaths.
Jonathan Welborn, 30, is now charged with two counts of negligent homicide and two counts of endangering a minor. 26-year-old Brittany Hairston, who alerted police that the vehicle was missing with the children inside, is charged with two counts of first degree endangering a minor.
Evidence showed that Welborn was driving the truck with the two children inside before the incident happened. He was drug tested and admitted to smoking methamphetamine that same day.
A witness stated that they saw Welborn back the truck into the pond and lost sight of the truck after the lights went under the water.
Both Welborn and Hairston are set to appear in court on August 8 at 1 p.m. Welborn is being held in the Saline County Detention Center on a $100,000 bond, and Hairston on a $25,000 bond.
