Tom Cruise is back as the tough as nails Jack Reacher in Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. When Reacher busts a small town Sheriff who’s been misusing U.S. Military property, he strikes a friendship with Major Susan Turner who is the CO of his former Military Police unit. He makes his way across the country to meet her but when he arrives, he learns that she has been arrested and charged with Espionage. When he begins to investigate for himself, he is framed and arrested for murder. Of course, it wouldn’t be much of an action movie if the main characters were in jail so they break out to try and uncover who has framed them while also trying to protect a teenage girl who may be Reacher’s daughter.

Tom Cruise is just great when he gets a good character. He’s not what I would call a character actor but he always brings something different to every role. Some of his best work isn’t in the more dramatic but in the action roles where he can be the movie star but still play a different action character. Jack Reacher is a great character. He’s the embodiment of how we sometimes wish we could react to certain problems. Sometimes bad people need a good beating and Jack Reacher understands that and acts on it. He’s very angry but he has a strong sense of right versus wrong. Cruise is perfect for this character. No other actor dedicates themselves to stunt work and physical action as he does.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back is not so much a mystery as it is a run from the bad guys while trying to solve a mystery. There’s a lot of running, a lot of fighting, and at least 4 occasions in which someone is either pick-pocketed or a cell-phone is slipped in their pocket. It’s a fine action movie but it lacks the thrill and the mystery of its predecessor. If you really like this character, you’ll like Never Go Back but if not then you need to see Jack Reacher.
