FORT SMITH, Ark. (KTHV) -- Fort Smith homeowners are upset after learning the city has been dumping their recycling at a landfill for possibly the last three years.

“I really think it's just ridiculous that they act like they're going around here recycling and they're not,” said one homeowner.

City leaders said a combination of issues, including an expired contract and a recycling center taking on less of their load, lead them to dump recyclable materials at the landfill instead.

The problem dates back to 2014 and the city administrator said they've been working on a long-term solution since. He said homeowners are not charged extra for recycling and he apologized for not telling them sooner.
