Governor Asa Hutchinson has declared Oct. 25, 2017, as Opioid Awareness Day in Arkansas.

In his proclamation, the Governor noted the "current opioid epidemic is one of the deadliest drug epidemics in American history, affecting every sex, race, class and age."

He also called upon "political leaders, law enforcement and medical communities, community leaders, and citizens to raise awareness of this issue which is devastating so many individuals and families in our state and union."

According to the proclamation, 1,067 people have died since 2013 in Arkansas from a drug overdose. Arkansas ranks in the top 20 percent of states that prescribe the most painkillers per capital.
