LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- This weekend will be Little Rock Zoo guests' last chance to see Bakari the lion, at least for a few weeks.

Bakari will be temporarily moved indoors while a new containment fence is installed in his exhibit. Preparations are also under way to bring in two new young female lions to join him once the fence construction is complete.

The lion exhibit will be closed for viewing beginning Monday, June 5, for up to 8 weeks. The construction project is a proactive measure to replace the older fence with a taller one with new wiring.

Bakari, who will turn 11 in October, has five bedrooms to choose from in the indoor quarters, giving him plenty of space and variety while off exhibit. He will also receive extra enrichment to keep him active.

Bakari has been at the Little Rock Zoo since 2008, when he joined female lions Nyla and Sidney in the lion exhibit. He has been on his own since October 2016.
