NEWPORT, Ark. (KTHV) -- The town of Newport will never be the same.

That's what those who live there said since the passing of Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford. He was killed in the line of duty Monday evening. Friday his body was laid to rest.

About 1,100 people showed up to his funeral at the Newport campus of Arkansas State University. Weatherford was a 15 year veteran with the Newport Police Department and a husband and dad to two.

“He touched so many people. He was a great person. Great guy,” said Paul Richardson who was a childhood friend of Weatherford.

Governor Hutchinson spoke at his funeral that filled the center for arts building plus two overflow rooms. Weatherford attended the FBI academy last year with Captain Kevin Russell with the Benton Police Department.

“It was really powerful. Really a sad day. Hopefully the rest of us will carry it from here for him," said Russell.

Some knew him and some didn’t, but law enforcement from agencies across the state and out came to show their respect and support.

“Those memories come back and you realize the people who help shape what you are and he was one of the people who helped shape me," said Richardson.

In Lieutenant Weatherford’s funeral program it said he had an undeniable passion for police work, but that his greatest love was his family. If you want to help the Weatheford’s family, a memorial fund has been set up at the Merchants and Planters Bank in Newport.
