Partnership between brewery and Hot Springs National Park helps maintain history

A partnership between Superior Bathhouse Brewery and the Hot Springs National Park has brought more foot traffic down the city's most popular strip.

A partnership between Superior Bathhouse Brewery and the Hot Springs National Park has brought more foot traffic down the city's most popular strip.

Rose Schweikhart, owner of Superior Bathhouse, said she always wanted to open up a brewery and the partnership created the perfect opportunity.

"Our hot spring water in Hot Springs National Park is very rare and drinkable, so I had the idea to open a brewery and use the water to make my beer," she said.

Schweikhart signed a 55-year lease with the park, which she thinks will give the business plenty of time to grow and thrive. She said part of her responsibility under the lease is to handle all maintenance, construction, and repair costs for the historic building.

"Not only do I get to use a fabulous building that suits my needs but the national park no longer has to incur those expenses," Schweikhart said. "It's a win-win for both parties."

She feels that her business is a great example for a great investment downtown.

Josie Fernandez, Superintendent of Hot Springs National Park, said the partnership offers nothing but positive changes.

"The buildings are being used and occupied, the buildings are being maintained and protected by our partners, and as a result of the lease we get revenue every year which gets to be kept here locally," she explained.

When the project was first started there were six vacant buildings, but now they only have one vacant building.

Fernandez said the park service is looking for one last business to fill that final spot.

"Anyone who has a viable business and wants to partner with us and is a business that would be appropriate to be located in a national park, we want to hear from you," she said.
