LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- A lot has changed over the years between pets and their owners.
"Over the last 30 years, pets have moved into the house," said Doctor Bob Hale. "They've even moved into the beds. Mine included. They're literally part of the family."
And just like you would with any family member, when they get sick, you take them to the doctor.
"Believe it or not we're seeing a lot of cancer." Dr. Hale says some treatments can become so expensive, it can lead to a decision no pet owner, or veterinarian, wants to make.
“When you have to euthanize an animal because the family can't afford a surgery. That's heart breaking."
That's why he recommends pet insurance. "It's a good deal for people who have pets," he said, "a very good deal."
Pet insurance companies offer two levels; accident or illness only. There are several pet insurance companies out there, Nationwide is the largest.

"Our purebred little dogs tend to have a few more problems," said Dr. Bob. It also depends on the age of your pet. "Usually around six, seven, eight years is when you start seeing problems," he added. But "it's that freedom of coming in. Doctor, check my dog or cat out, I'm covered. And that's pretty nice," he says.
If you don't have pet insurance, Dr. Bob says to talk to your vet.
