EL DORADO, Ark. (KTHV) — Five pit bulls were stolen Sunday night from the El Dorado dog pound.

One of the pits was a mother to eight puppies that died overnight after she was taken from them. Four thieves were caught on camera before one of them snatched the camera down.

Animal control officer for El Dorado, Charles Hartsell, said this isn't the first time this has happened.

“This has happened three or four times since I've been here the last five years,” he said.

Animal control said pit bulls are the types of dogs these thieves go after in order to use them for fighting.

“There's 40,000 ring dog fights in the U.S and there's 110,000 street fighters. That's people that steal these and make a buck or two by letting them fight in the streets,” Hartsell said.

He said the city of El Dorado is overrun with pit bulls for this very reason.

“We have 35 pens here and 25 of them have pit bulls in them,” he said.

He said he’s trying to save as many as he can before they die or get stolen for profit.

If you live in El Dorado or anywhere in that area be on the lookout for pit bulls. You can usually tell if they're used for street fighting by the condition they're in. For example, if it has purple spray on it that may indicate an owner has sprayed the dog with antiseptic spray after a fight. If the dogs don't get better, they kill them or leave them to die.
