LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Sunday was a busy day for summer camp send-offs.
For the 20th year, that means an exciting day for 100 young people from Little Rock. They are heading off to Police Youth Camp.
It's a program that pairs officers from all sections of the department with kids who might not otherwise get a summer getaway from the city. It also builds a foundation for the future.
“We all know that there are strained relationships between young people and the police departments across our country. So this is a way for the Little Rock Police Department to engage with the youth in our community,” said Little Rock Police Department Assistant Chief Hayward Finks.
The kids get a week of outdoor fun like canoeing and crafts, as well as a visit to the Crystal Bridges Art Museum. The three dozen officers who lead the camp all volunteer their time.
