SARDIS, Ark. (KTHV) - A string of burglaries in the Sardis community have some of the neighbors on high alert and some would even say it's a break-in epidemic.
On Tuesday, one family came home to their house ransacked. Their electronics and jewelry had been stolen. Now, they begin to pick up the pieces after thieves stole nearly everything of value from them.
"If it wasn't valuable they broke it," said Jason Baker, the father of the household. "They took everything that meant anything, took a lot of stuff that you couldn't put a value on."
Baker said his step-daughter and grandson are terrified after the incident. They are so scared, thinking burglars will come back at any moment.
The break-in happened in broad daylight on McPherson Springs Road. The thieves were so brazen they even ate some ice cream before leaving.
"It's kind of heartbreaking. You work so hard for what you got and just for everything to be gone in a matter of hours," Baker said.
Regardless of the reasons behind the burglary, Baker said he's planning to beef up his security system. And neighborhoods are forming a watch group to hopefully curb the issue in the community.
"People coming home seeing their door kicked in and you don't believe it can happen to you, but it does," Baker said.
Baker believes that as long as the burglars are out there committing crimes, no one in Sardis is truly safe.
