Sherwood police asks for residents' assistance

"The more lights that are on, the more secure the neighborhood will be. If the whole neighborhood is lit up, they're going to go to a different place."

SHERWOOD, Ark. (KTHV)- Lights! Camera! Action! Sherwood police are pushing people in the community to join in on a new initiative.

“What we're asking is turn your porch lights on, driveway lights on, whatever lights you have, please turn them on. The lights will help officers at night when they're driving down your street,” Sgt. Keith Wilson with the Sherwood police department said.

Sgt. Wilson said the added lighting helps officers see criminals better at night.

“When you turn on your lights it backlights them and helps the officers see in the area,” he said.

They're also asking people to turn their security cameras towards the road and take all valuables out of their cars.

Sgt. Wilson said they're seeing a fad of young teens breaking into cars and they hope this helps.

“The arrests aren't seeming to help so now we're asking the public to help,” he said.

Sherwood residents are jumping in on the strategy. A lot of them have ring video doorbells, video cameras on the outside, inside, floodlights and they're turning their porch lights on at night.

Angie Manek has secured her home from the front to the back.

“The more lights that are on, the more secure the neighborhood will be. If the whole neighborhood is lit up, they're going to go to a different place,” she said.

She keeps up with everything around her house, day and night; from random dogs getting into her backyard to strange cars in front of her house.

Manek said more security not only helps her but it helps the department.

“Less crimes in the community makes it a safer community,” she said.

Sherwood police encourage people to keep the serial numbers of things like laptops stored away, in case it gets stolen. That way when you report it and they recover it, they'll know it's yours.
