MAUMELLE, Ark. (KTHV) - The northbound side of Interstate 430 was shut down Tuesday evening as North Little Rock police engaged in a standoff with a driver.

According to police, the incident originally began as a pursuit and the driver got onto the interstate. The driver's wife called police saying her husband wanted to hurt himself and had a weapon with him heading towards Big Dam Bridge.

Officers used equipment to damage his tires but he still managed to get on the interstate.

Police stopped the driver and then closed down the northbound side of I-430 near the Maumelle exit by Wild River Country.

Around 3:10 p.m., the standoff with the driver ended and traffic was beginning to move on I-430.

The driver was put into protective custody and is being transported to a nearby hospital with no physical injuries. Officers took a handgun into evidence.

Arkansas State Police are assisting the North Little Rock Police Department.
