LIVERMORE, CA (CBS/KPIX) -- It's made headlines around the world and has even been the subject of story books. Now, the famous "Livermore Light Bulb" is making news again.
It's been burning since 1901 and was about to celebrate its 112th birthday when it suddenly went dark, or did it?
Livermore's famous centennial light bulb has been burning since 1901. Then suddenly it went out overnight. Firefighters at Firehouse 6 never wanted it to go out on their watch, but it mysteriously did.
Livermore fire chief Jim Miguel says, "I got a call this morning about 5:30 the light bulb was out . They weren't sure why it was out."
Then just suddenly Wednesday morning, the light bulb abruptly flickered back on at 6:15 a.m.
An investigation revealed the power supply had failed last night. Retired deputy fire chief Tom Bramell says, "I was afraid I might have lost an old friend. It was just UPS system. A little CPR was done. Nice job."
The light turns 112 next month. Visitors from all over the world have come here to see the light and sign the guestbook. It's been featured in the Guinness Book of World Records and children's books.
And so is it still a part of record book history? It's still on! Miguel says, "This was off for nine hours but I don't suspect it will be an issue, Guinness so it still lives on the record. I think it still lives on. It's on!"
