BARLING, Ark. (KTHV) -- A man and woman have been rescued after being trapped in a tent under a fallen tree at Springhill Park in Barling on Friday morning.

According to Fort Smith Battalion Chief Stanley Cole, the rain from the early morning thunderstorm soaked the ground, and a strong gust of wind caused the tree to fall.

The woman was pinned for two to three hours, but the man was easily freed by rescuers, Chief Cole said.

Crews lifted the massive tree by using a crane. Rescuers administered oxygen and a type of IV to the woman while she was trapped and as she was being carried on a gurney to the ambulance.

Family friends told CBS affiliate 5NEWS that the couple was in their mid-20s, and the man had to be flown to a Springfield, Missouri hospital.

Both are in critical condition and the woman has been taken to an area hospital, Chief Cole said. The victims’ names have not been released at this time.
