Missing Texas man found after extensive search in Arkansas

According to the Polk County Sheriff’s office, 38-year-old Joshua McClatchy got lost on a hiking trail in the Caney Creek Wilderness area near Mena.

UPDATE-- Officials are reporting they have found Joshua McClatchy after an extensive search near the area where he was reported missing.

He was found alive but there is no information on his condition at this time.

ORIGINAL-- The search continued on Friday for a Texas man that went missing last Saturday. According to the Polk County Sheriff’s office, 38-year-old Joshua McClatchy got lost on a hiking trail in the Caney Creek Wilderness area near Mena.

“We received a call from his mother that he texted her from the Buckeye Trail, that he was in trouble, he was lost and dehydrated. We started to search immediately,” Polk County Sheriff Scott Sawyer said.

While the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is leading the search efforts, other departments are stepping in to help, including the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management. Sheriff Sawyer said dozens of volunteers are also on standby.

“I have all sorts of search teams ready to come in, all I have to do is call them,” Sheriff Sawyer said.

Different groups used various methods and technology to find McClatchy, including drones for aerial views and search dogs.

“We have flown drones and aircrafts, the problem is we have had bad weather for a week,” Sheriff Sawyer said.

Sheriff Sawyer said it’s a race against time, not only because McClatchy has been out there for so long, but because he may also be injured.

“If he was up and mobile we would have found him,” Sheriff Sawyer said. “I feel Like he’s hurt and that’s why we’re pushing so hard. We’re out there early in the morning and late at night.”

Sheriff Scott said, "he’s been in contact with McClatchy’s family and has made a promise to do everything he can to find him, and he says the community is rallying behind that promise."

“We’ve had deliveries of drinks for my rescuers, we have McDonald’s donating meals, Subway donating meals, Walmart donating drinks, local folks bringing a case of water here and there,” Sheriff Sawyer said.

He went on to say the search will continue until they find McClatchy and more resources will be requested as they are needed.
