On Monday, the New Yorker published an article in which President Donald Trump reportedly joked that Vice President Mike Pence "wants to hang" all gay people.

According to the article, a staff member from Trump's campaign recalled that the president would mock "Pence's religiosity." That staff member reportedly said that after meeting with Pence, President Trump would ask a person if the vice president made them pray.

The author of the article, Jane Mayer, also wrote that two other sources told her that Trump would criticize Pence over his views on both homosexuality and abortion.

As the two met with a legal scholar, they were told that if Roe v. Wade was overturned, "many states would likely legalize abortion on their own."

"You've wasted all this time and energy on it," Trump reportedly said to Pence, "and it's not going to end abortion anyway."

But when the discussion turned to LGBT rights, Mayer reported that Trump "motioned toward" the vice president and jokingly said, "Don't ask that guy -- he wants to hang them all!"

Since becoming vice president, Pence has become a key target in LGBT protests, including a "queer dance party" held outside of his former house in Washington D.C.
