'Whatever the flood takes away, you just have to start over' North Little Rock neighborhood fights for hope

“It’s just nothing, you’re losing furniture, whatever the flood takes away, you just have to start over,” Linda said.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — People in the Dixie Addition in North Little Rock have evacuated their homes after several streets were consumed by floodwaters.

People who were still in the neighborhood on Monday worked all day to move their belongings to higher ground. Many of them said, if floodwaters reached their home it could be a loss they won’t be able to recover from.

“It’s just nothing, you’re losing furniture, whatever the flood takes away, you just have to start over,” Linda said.

Her mother has lived in the neighborhood for over 25 years. She said so far, her home has never taken in any water but is afraid that won’t be the case this time around.

“We are moving out mom’s furniture and everything has to go,” Linda said.

With tears in her eyes, Linda said aside from the material things, she’s afraid she’ll lose all the memories made in her childhood home.

“New home, new neighborhood, it’s just a flat start over,” Linda said.

She went on to say she’s thankful her elderly mother has the help she needs to get out.

“There’s a lot of elderly people out here that really need assistance and they’re not getting it, right now,” Linda said.

After living in the same neighborhood her entire life, Berdina James was also forced to leave her home after she says she received an evacuation notice.

“They gave us letters in our hands saying that it was going to be, and we needed to go when they say go,” Berdina said.

She said the only thing protecting her home and all her belongings, is a sandbag barrier put up by volunteers.

“We have people coming that’s in the community and people coming out of the community and I don’t have nothing bad to say about the people coming to help because they do not have to if they do not want to,” Berdina said.

Just like Linda’s family, Berdina said if the water does consume her home, she’s not sure she’ll ever recover.

“I know I’m not a working person and if I lost everything unless insurance did give me something, I wouldn’t have anything,” Berdina said.

Until the water stops rising, Linda said there’s only one thing to do.

“Just pray for the community, pray for the people in the community and pray that they are somewhere safe after all of this is over and my main prayer is that they all return back to their homes and that everything is ok,” Linda said.
