UNDATED (KTHV) - Whether you're traveling by car or by air, you may see some changes in traffic compared to last year as you head out for the first holiday of the season.

Motorists may find more company on the road than they did last year. However, while Americans may be spending less on their trips, they will be staying closer to home.

Triple A forecasts 43.6 million travelers for Thanksgiving, which is an uptick of less than one percent since last year. These numbers relate primarily to the economy, which is sluggish but still improving.

The average traveler is expected to spend $56 less on their trip than last year, and the average distance is down 16 percent.

The vast majority, 39 million people, will travel by car, and the number of air passengers will go slightly down to just over 3.1 million.

Despite fewer travelers in the air, fare watchers said you shouldn't expect last minute deals. If you have yet to book because you're waiting on a bargain, you may be out of luck since those few seats left will most likely be sold at a premium.

The TSA urged fliers to brush up on security and screening procedures. They said they understand that traveling can be stressful, but knowing what to expect can make the difference in being able to enjoy the journey.

Peak travel days are the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday and Monday after.
