Giving season: Arkansas organizations that need donations

The time for giving is upon us and they are numerous organizations to give to right here in Arkansas.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) — If you have the extra money to spare in the next few days, some organizations are in need of donations for Christmas.

Everyone from children in the Little Rock School District to animals at the humane society need help. Even just a small donation can help out in a big way.

"it's better to give and to love and this is the season and the time for that,” Chris Carrigan said.

Carrigan and Rev. Benny Johnson have delivered donated bikes to hundreds of kids in the Little Rock School District for the past ten years.

'A lot of time that's the only thing they'll get for Christmas. We team up with several schools in the district. Give them 25 bikes a piece,” Rev. Johnson said.

But this year, they need more people to donate bikes than ever.

"Our goal is 400 bikes and we have 187, that leave us 213 short,” Rev. Johnson said.

Rev. Johnson started the bike drive in honor of his fiancée who died. She was an educator for LRSD.

“We just want to put a smile on kids face who otherwise wouldn’t have gotten anything for Christmas,” he said.

The bikes are sometimes the only gift children receive for Christmas.

"I had one little guy he said ‘Man! I never had a bicycle.' And giving him that bike was like giving him a million dollars. It was just a joy to see the excitement of a bicycle in a child's life,” Carrigan said.

This time of year, animal shelters also need help with donations to help animals to stay warm.

"Animals that are outside need to be in shelters and need to be taken care of. So that increases our need, so therefore we have more animals that we need money for,” Debbie Howell said.

Howell works for the Humane Society of Pulaski County and said almost any donation is welcome.

"Things like the kind of food we feed. Also there will be things like blankets. The animals need enrichment things like toys, not so much treats but things that will keep them occupied,” Howell said.
