Adding a steel door to your house will pay for itself

Your front door is one of the most important of elements of your house. From curb appeal and aesthetic charm to safety and security, the front door is the first impression for guests and home appraisers.

If you're thinking about a home improvement project, replacing your entryway door makes a lot of sense. Home improvement experts agree that entryway door replacement can provide a full return on your investment. In fact, the home improvement gurus at House Logic report, "Year in and year out, no single project has provided such a healthy return on your home improvement dollar as a new front door."

According to House Logic's Cost vs. Value Report, replacing your existing door with a steel door averages a 98 percent return on investment. In fact, the 2015 report puts the average cost of installing a new steel door at $1,230 and the long-term return at $1,252. That's a return on investment of 102 percent.

"It gives you the best bang for your buck in terms of transforming the look and feel of your home," says Brandon Erdmann, president of the remodeling firm HomeSealed Exteriors in Milwaukee, in a post on Century 21's website. "Plus, old exterior doors can be a huge source of energy loss. So you're improving the look of your house, improving energy efficiency, and you're able to do it without breaking the bank."

The American Steel Institute also notes that steel provide the "best long-term value" because of their sturdiness and need for fewer repairs than other types of doors. What's more, steel is strong, as Superman fans know. Plus, you get the benefit of added security, better fire protection and cleanliness.

Another major advantage of a steel door is security. Steel doors are much more resistant to vandalism and break-ins than other types of doors. Moreover, steel can be very beneficial if your house is subject to volatile weather, such as heavy winds and hurricanes. According to a report from the National Association of Home Builders, "If you live in an area that frequently gets heavy storms, consider installing steel entry doors."

Because of their strength and durability, metal doors have a lifespan of 30 years or more, and are relatively maintenance-free. The folks at the Steel Institute also point out that modern steel doors can be customized to meet your personal aesthetic requirements. You can opt for everything from a sleek stainless steel finish to whatever color meets your needs.

What's more, if you're interested in being more "green," steel doors are environmentally friendly. According the Steel Institute's experts, steel is the most recycled material in North America When you're ready to start shopping for a new steel door, you can go right to the websites of many of the leading manufacturers, such as Ceco Door, Pioneer, Republic and Steelcraft. Of course, you can also start your search at your favorite local home improvement center, too. Lowes and Home Depot, for example, have steel doors in stock and also can custom order doors for you.

Once you've got your new door installed, sit back and enjoy a rare home improvements that will only grow more valuable. One thing for sure, you'll appreciate your new door.
