CABOT, Ark. (KTHV) -- In Cabot a grand opening offering veterans a helping hand when it comes to groceries.

They're making sure those who served can keep the kitchen stocked. Feed Our Vets gives more than 10,000 veterans and their families free food all across the nation.

Saturday, local veterans opened the first ever veteran's food pantry in Central Arkansas. Air Force veteran and Cabot Pantry director Deyonka Hickey opened the doors to a place that's new to this area, offering nonperishable food items to veterans and their families all free of charge.

"I would like to have the pantry open more than once a month,” Hickey said. “Because right now, we're going to open the third Saturday of every month."

Hickey said they could use a stable space to continue their mission of giving. They were able to help more than seven families on their opening day. The Banks family joins other veterans helping out with the effort.

"We showed up really to just help,” Banks said. “And we ended up becoming friends with a lot of people."

According to a study by the Housing Assistance Council more than 220,000 veterans live in Arkansas and more than 8% are living in poverty.

"Today is very important,” Banks said. “Just to show not only my family but fellow veterans that they are important."

But they're looking to do, even more, donated items help bring the mission to life and with contributions from Arkansans that will help to keep it going.

"Sometimes towards the end of the month it gets hard and then some of the retiree's, they only get paid once a month,” Hickey said. “That's what we want to do, help them through the month."

Some requirements have to be approved before veterans can start shopping. You can find those details on by clicking here.
