Amy Schumer's confidence shines in 'I Feel Pretty'

Here's a look at this weekend's box office lineup. It includes an Amy Schumer comedy, a thriller starring Paula Patton and Omar Epps, as well as the long-awaited sequel to Super Troopers.

I Feel Pretty stars Amy Schumer as Renee, a woman who struggles with feelings of deep insecurity and low self-esteem. It affects every aspect of her life including dating, relationships with her friends and her career. When she finally gets the courage to join and exercise class, she has a brutal fall and wakes up believing she is a potential supermodel. Her newfound confidence empowers her to live her life with confidence.

I’m not a big Amy Schumer fan because I think some of her standup routines cross the line from dirty to gross and I thought her last film Snatched was awful.

I Feel Pretty has changed my opinion. She is fun and charming in this movie. It would not have worked without her. It is difficult to see Amy Schumer portray a woman lacking in confidence because she has this amazing, successful career and this incredible confidence in herself. She pulls it off and her charm comes through when she’s exuding that confidence in her character versus the insecure version of it.

Yes, I realize the irony of saying I preferred the confident character versus the one suffering from self-esteem issues and there’s no way to argue my way out of it.

It feels like a dangerous position for a comedy to be about a woman getting hit on the head to realize she has worth and value and that her perceived worth and value is based on how she sees her appearance. Don’t worry there’s a lesson in the film that deals with that and makes it a non-issue but it still feels like a weird thing to write about.

I Feel Pretty is a movie made for women and their friends to go see. In my screening, not only was I the only man by himself, I was the only man. I was pleasantly surprised that I liked this movie. It is charming and genuinely funny.
