Ornamental grasses to perk up your yard | Today’s Home

What are ornamental grasses? How do they benefit my home and garden? Chris H. Olsen tells us.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Ornamental Grasses, what are the benefits to Ornamental Grass?

Well, for the most part, they are easy to grow. Two, they can take hot full sun so if you have a condition and area like that they are the perfect plant.

And what Chris Olsen really likes about them is their texture. It isn't just about color in the garden it's also about texture. Their softness. But what is great about this is not only do you get the texture for months and months and months - Spring, Summer, and Fall - but also in the Winter time.

It's Winter right now and these grasses still look good.

They're a little brown, but don't worry about that. That's the look and that's how they should be looking right now in the winter time.

Don't get impatient and cut them back quite yet. Look at them until their seed heads start to flip-flop and start to break and fall over then is the time you want to cut them.

Which is usually the end of February or the first of March. Now, there is lots of different types of ornamental grasses that you can do.

Chris loves the switchgrass which is what he has because it stays upright. It doesn't seem to flop over as much as other types of grasses.

Then he also has this variegated. You can't really tell right now but it is the variegated miscanthus grass, which is beautiful.

This is one plant, so you've got to make sure you give it plenty of space. Now, remember Ornamental Grasses are easy to grow for the most part. Require consistent watering during the summer months, like full sun but let them look beautiful even like this in the winter time.
