St. Mark gives thanks by giving back to the community

Over 100 volunteers provided the homeless with hot meals, legal services, supplies, and more for the 11th year in a row.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - It's the time of year we're all reminded how important it is to give thanks for what we have, while also giving back to those who need it most. One Little Rock church celebrated turkey day early by feeding hundreds in the homeless community.

"We've got chicken and dressing, collard greens, corn, turkey and ham. We've got lemonade, water, everything! It's a Thanksgiving feast,” said Outreach Pastor Glen Hersey. “We've got different skills that we're providing, like job skills.”

This is the 11th year St. Mark Baptist Church has given the homeless community more than just a hot meal.

Over 100 volunteers took part in helping nearly 200 people celebrate Thanksgiving today. The church is heavily involved in the community and takes pride in giving gifts that keep on giving.

“We have people on staff to help them with legal issues. Just because you're homeless doesn't mean you don't have life problems just like everybody else,” said church member and volunteer, Margaret Dedman.

Along with onsite attorneys, those who came out were given hygiene kits, job application assistance, free haircuts and more.

“We've got a distribution room where they can go over and get clothing to help them survive out in the elements. It's just our way of blessing those who are in need,” said Hersey.

As you prepare to sit around the table with your family this week, remember it’s better to give than to receive.

“Because it's a community of homeless people, we as a community need to come together to try and help them solve their problems, not just during the holidays but all the time,” Dedman said. “Every day is a challenge for them,”
