An 8-week-old puppy is on the road to recovery with a foster family after it was found in Fort Smith hanging from a fence by a cable in an alley.

A family found China the puppy on South 21st Street, according to CBS affiliate KFSM. The family then brought the puppy to Hope Humane Society not knowing the extent of the injuries.

It was found that China had trouble breathing and parts of her body were swollen.

The owner is offering a $1,000 reward for information as to who abused the puppy.

"She had to be put in an oxygen tank to regulate her oxygen levels because they were very, very low," said Amber Neal with Hope Humane Society.

Officials with the humane society said that based on her injuries it was likely that China was abused before being left in the alley.

"We're pretty sure that she was beaten before she was hung on the fence," Neal said. "Obviously, if someone is gonna hang her on the fence, they're leaving her for dead."

The humane society went on social media to post China's story and people were quick to come forward with help. More than $2,400 has been donated so far and plenty of people were ready to adopt China.

While China stays with her foster family, she will have to take pain medication and antibiotics to heal completely.

Hope Humane Society is hoping to find more information and witnesses so an animal cruelty investigation can be opened.
