Cornbread festival serves up tasty treats on South Main Street

One of the tastiest festivals of the season returned to South Main Street Saturday, the annual cornbread competition.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- One of the tastiest festivals of the season returned to South Main Street Saturday, the annual cornbread competition.

The neighborhood always fills up to celebrate a southern cooking staple. Professional chefs bring their best recipes, alongside amateur bakers who want to see how their cornbread stacks up.

Every year, contestants show there there's way more to cornbread than store-bought boxes. Some will even share their secrets, if you ask nicely.

“Well this has bacon in it so that always helps. And I also use syrup, so it's really moist and cakey. So it's just a really good. I also think making it in a cast iron skillet really helps,” said cornbread cook Melanie Keen.

Proceeds from the festival go toward the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance and the SOMA Neighborhood Association.
