Tehama Co. man praised as hero acting as decoy against gunman

"I shouted at him and I said why don't you shoot this way instead."

While many run away from gunfire, one Tehama County man ran towards it during the deadly shooting near an elementary school, Tuesday morning.

We tracked the man, Jessie Sanders, down at his home. He lives near Rancho Tehama Elementary School.

"My sister stops me and says there are gunshots at the school," Sanders said. "I go around the corner where I'm about at the school and I see that guy shooting rounds inside the school. I shouted at him and I said why don't you shoot this way instead."

He said he ran down the street and the gunman tried to run him over. He didn't get shot but he was grazed by a bullet.

"I didn't think," Sanders said. "I did."

Sanders said he felt compelled to do something. He says he has so many family members in the school.

"Totally mixed feelings," Debbie Sanders, his mom said. "Part of me is so proud of him, on the other hand he could've been killed, but I'm so thankful my grandkids are okay."

"I don't feel like a hero," Sanders said. "I just feel like I couldn't live with myself. I would've rather died then tell my family that I didn't try."
