Trail from Little Rock to Hot Springs gets $2.6 million grant to help cover design costs

The 60-mile Southwest Trail received a $2.6 million grant to help cover design costs.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - Progress is being made on the proposed 60-mile trail from Little Rock to Hot Springs. Within the next week, proposals from design firms will start being accepted.

"With a trail like this of this size you can get out and stay in your own community," said Cody Burnett, V.P. of Friends of the Southwest Trail.

Running from Pulaski County, through Saline County and making its way into Garland County, the Southwest Trail is not just an idea anymore. A $2.6 million grant was awarded to help cover the cost of the design.

"We really wanted to pursue funding that would allow us to do the design all at one time so there would be that continuity," said Pulaski County Judge Barry Hyde.

While many major trails take 15 to 20 years to complete, Hyde estimates this could be done within 10 years.

"I strongly believe we can be under construction on some portions within five years," said Hyde.

Those working closely on this project are expecting updates from Metroplan at a task force meeting Monday.
