Arkansas Business: Stocks closed out May fairly high

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Arkansas Business) -- Stocks closed out May mostly higher Friday, sending two out of the three major U.S. indexes to record highs.

Trading was uneven with indexes moving between small gains and losses for most of the day. But a late push left the Dow and S&P at all-time highs, but just barely.

Final figures show May as the best month for investors since February. The S&P rose 2.1 percent for the month, the Dow rose 0.8 percent and the Nasdaq rose 3.1 percent.

Apple conference kicks off today in Calif.

Today's a red-letter day for fans and investors in Apple.

The maker of iPhones and iPads kicks off its week-long Worldwide Developer Conference in San Francisco today.

Today's keynote presentation by Apple executives including CEO Tim Cook will be closely watched.

Apple set to unveil new versions of its iPhone and iPad operating systems, iOS 8, and the software that powers its desktop Mac computers.

ArcBest Corp. announced new headquarters

ArcBest Corp., the trucking and logistics firm that just changed its name from Arkansas Best Corp., announcing plans for a new 150-thousand-SF headquarters on 40 acres at Chaffee Crossing in Fort Smith.

The company, whose logistics business has been expanding, says the new space, in addition to its current headquarters, will allow it to add 975 jobs over the next 10 years.

ArcBest plans to break ground on the project this fall, with completion set for early 2016.

Meanwhile, the city of Fort Smith will vote tomorrow night on a tax refund incentive for building materials for the headquarters.

Ark. city rankings on economic activity

The city of Bentonville topped the Arkansas Tech University Business Index's ranking of 16 municipalities in Arkansas, according to data compiled for February.

The index ranks 16 cities in Arkansas based on economic activity.

In February, 10 cities saw economic activity better than the state average, and eight cities improved their index value from results of January's data.

The top cities on the index were Bentonville, Rogers, Fayetteville, Springdale, Fort Smith and Conway.
