According to CBS station KHOU in Houston, Dennis Bradford was discovered by a deputy on a routine round shortly after 1 a.m., and was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Officials at the jail said he had made a noose from a bed cover.

In 1990, his then 8-year-old victim, Jennifer Schuett, woke up naked in a field, covered with fire ants. She had been kidnapped from her apartment, sexually assaulted and left in the field. Her throat had been cut.

Fourteen hours later, a group of children found her and called for help. Detectives found Schuett's pajama top and underwear a few miles from where she had been found. They also found a man's T-shirt and underwear, but back then, DNA testing was not what it is today, and back then, larger amounts of fluid were needed to confirm tests.

In 2008, Detective Tim Cromie along with FBI Special Agent Richard Rennison were assigned to the case. They persuaded an FBI lab to retest the clothing for DNA, linking Bradford to the case.

Bradford, 40, was arrested last October in Little Rock. He had been living in the city for seven years, married with children. Bradford had previously served time in Arkansas for a 1996 abduction of a 35-year-old woman, who was raped and whose throat was also slit.

Schuett has recovered and believes she recovered her voice so she could encourage other victims to speak out against criminals.
