National Guard helping in Mena after tornado in May 2009.
ROBINSON MANEUVER TRAINING CENTER, Ark. - The Arkansas National Guard responded to calls for support in the community of Vilonia and in the vicinity of Hot Springs Village after tornadoes hammered the state last night.
The Guard deployed 85 Soldiers and Airmen to support civil authorities with search operations, route clearance, security and traffic control in Vilonia, while another 20 Soldiers deployed to Garland County to support with similar missions. The first 20 troops arrived on scene to support in Vilonia at approximately 11:45 p.m. The majority of the supporting forces were tasked to arrive at approximately 7 a.m. this morning.
The Guard is also coordinating with Carroll County authorities for the possibility of a need for support there. An assessment is expected to be made this morning at 10 a.m. in coordination between the Guard and civil authorities in the county.
A further assessment of the damage across the state is anticipated today and the Guard stands ready to respond as necessary in the event more support is required.
