MALVERN, Ark. (KTHV) -- Shortly after midnight Tuesday, a prisoner was found dead in his cell at the Hot Spring County Detention Facility.
The prisoner was arrested by Arkansas State Police and booked into the jail at 3:15 p.m. Monday afternoon. According to the Hot Spring County Sheriff's Office, the man was being charged with DWI and several other traffic and vehicle related offenses.
He was being kept at the jail on an eight hour hold due to his intoxication. When jail staff was preparing to release him, they found him dead in his cell.
The Sheriff's Office says a review of jail logs and recorded jail monitoring video shows the man was properly checked on periodically throughout the afternoon and evening. They say he was checked on less than 45 minutes prior to being found dead and had been communicating with staff and trustees up to the last check.
Other than his level of intoxication, the Sheriff's Office says there were no abnormal reasons for concerns.
The Arkansas State Police is assisting Hot Spring County Sheriff's Office investigators in this investigation. The man's body is being sent to the state Medical Examiner for an autopsy. The man's name is not being released at this time.
