Mark Plath and his wife Sarah Baines
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Some Arkansans were vacationing on the cruise ship in Italy that sunk off the coast.
The latest reports show three people killed and still dozens are unaccounted for. Among the survivors were a group from Central Arkansas including Mark Plath of Little Rock.
"The life raft exploded because the boat was on top of the life raft and at that time the water was only two meters away from us so we jumped in and swam to shore" says Mark Plath.
THV caught up with Mark Plath's father-in-law, John Baines. Baines' son, Justin was also on board the cruise ship with his wife. All parties made it to safety.
"They said everybody's okay, but they are at the lifeboats. The boat is going down. And they're going to be okay; they're getting on a lifeboat and going to a safe place," says John Baines of Searcy.
About 4,200 people were on the ship when their eight day cruise ship was cut short. Officials have arrested the captain who could face charges of abandoning the ship and even manslaughter.
